Virtual Kaypro Computer
Last revision of this page: January 25, 2025
I own eight Kaypro's, which I also use regularly. But still it is sometimes useful or even easy to work on a virtual Kaypro or Z80. Especially if you just want to compile a program or something similar. I use either the Virtual Kaypro Computer by Douglas Miller or the Z80PACK (CPMSIM) by Udo Munk.
But for both virtual environments you also need some utilities to copy single CP/M files into or out of an image. You can do this easily with the so called CPMTOOLS from Michael Haardt.
The Virtual Kaypro basically works, but I have some problems on my iMac with macOS when opening/mounting a disk; with Windows 10 and Linux it works flawlessly. Because I don't always want to switch between two physical computers, I like to use Linux on my iMac with Parallels Desktop. Especially Linux Mint is a good choice here, because it needs only few system resources and uses UBUNTU Linux as a base.
For more basically information about the Virtual Kaypro Computer please goto the site of Douglas Miller.

I am actually a friend of macOS, but in the past the operating system was definitely better and ran much more smoothly. In some cases, my 10-year-old MacBook launches applications faster than it does today. That is not normal! Even via the detour with Parallels Desktop the "Virtual Kaypro" runs better and faster than directly under macOS.
With the CP/M Simulator (CPMSIM) and the Virtual Kaypro (see below) I have for example completely recompiled the Monitor ROM for the Kaypro II (81-149C) with M80/L80. You need a little patience because 2,5 MHz are not a "racing car".

This way you can start your "Kaypro" quickly and you don't need to get it out of the shelf. But like for the CPMSIM you need the CPMTOOLS to import or export single files from/to an image.
