Setting up a DOS PC From Scratch

Last revision of this page: February 1, 2025

It all started in Jan/Feb 2017 with the installation of a DOS PC with MS-DOS 6.22. Actually, after about 30 years, I just wanted to be able to read an old 5.25" floppy disk again. And now I'm even able to write to hard-sectored floppy disks (Northstar Horizon).

I followed the article from ‘legroom.net’ and it all worked wonderfully. So if, like me, you have to start from scratch, then you've come to the right place.

2017: My first MS-DOS 6.22 PC with two MFM hard disks.

Start here at legroom.net. Meanwhile it is on wayback machine at archive.org.

The next two sites are by Wolfgang Kainz-Huber from Munich, Germany. He started with the Computer Museum München, but ‘moved’ some time ago and redesigned the site to Vintage Computing Lab. You will also find a lot of information here.
